Eligibility

This job is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. To be eligible under the program, applicants must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment*; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

International students are not eligible participants.

Term and Compensation

There are two 35 hr/wk on-site positions of 8 weeks each. Wages are $15.00/hr. Some shift work, weekends and evenings required.

Job Duties

Animal enclosure construction and maintenance

  • builds and maintains wood- and metal-framed outdoor animal enclosures
  • builds and maintains climbing structures in outdoor enclosures
  • maintains outdoor water equipment
  • builds nesting boxes

Building repairs and maintenance

  • maintains and repairs tools and equipment
  • performs minor/routine building maintenance and repairs, such as repairing drywall, painting, repairing furniture, building shelves, and disassembling and reassembling equipment

Grounds maintenance

  • cleans and maintains outside areas such as entryways, driveway and parking lots
  • maintains grounds, such as grass cutting, edging and tree trimming
  • performs minor gardening tasks, such as weeding, pruning and watering

Janitorial duties

  • collects and removes garbage and recyclable materials and ensures the safe disposal of hazardous waste
  • ensures grounds and equipment are kept tidy
  • cleans and sanitizes enclosures, cages and carriers
  • assists with building cleaning, pressure washing and related duties as required

Administrative duties

  • makes recommendations for major repairs and purchases
  • maintains records of supplies, needed repairs and scheduled maintenance procedures
  • obtains estimates for building and construction supplies and services

Qualifications

  • valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle (there is no public transit to our facility in North Gower)
  • enrollment in a post-secondary institution in carpentry, construction, facilities technician or related trades; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • proficiency in the use of hand and power tools
  • ability to apply common sense understanding and judgement to carry out written and oral instructions, identify and carry out maintenance needs, and follow safety standards
  • ability to meet physical demands of the job, such as heavy lifting
  • ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • ability to work independently with minimal supervision once trained
  • ability to set priorities and work under pressure
  • strong organizational and problem-solving skills
